Nappies
Cloth
nappies have really been having a revival due to lots of campaigning
& innovations in the world of washables.
Better for the environment
The UK produces about 800,000 tones of nappy waste a year, for
every £1 spent on disposables it costs the taxpayer 10p
to dispose of them! Costing £40 million a year! It takes
each one of these nappies 500 years to break down. Quite simply
we do not know how to dispose of disposables.
Compared to cloth nappies disposables use 3.5 times the energy,
2.3 times the waste water, 8.3 the raw non-renewable material,
up to 30 times the land for growing raw materials (7 million trees
alone are used for UK nappies every year)
Better for your pocket
From birth to potty costs to parents are around £1000 for
disposables compared to £400 for cloth nappies (that includes
washing).
Myths that need slaying
- More leaks - velcro, poppers & nappi nippas mean nappies
can be a snug, reliable fit (in fact with extra booster pads
at night I find cloth nappies more reliable) without the danger
of nappy pins.
- Nappy rash - disposable nappies have been marketed on this
myth since the 1980's but research (Getting to the Bottom of
Nappy Rash, British Journal of General practice 1997) stated
the type of nappy bore no relevance to the cause of nappy rash.
The best form of prevention is to change all nappies frequently
(every 2-4hrs).
- Endless washing - this depends on how many nappies you have,
if you have about 18 then you will be doing an extra load of
washing every 2-3 days.
