Mooncup Menstrual Cups
Mooncup Ltd. is a women-run business based in Brighton. Their mission is to make the experience of menstruation more positive, healthy and eco-friendly. In 2004, Mooncup Ltd. was awarded Ethical Company status for its commitment to people and animal friendly practices, making it the first sanitary protection manufacturer in the world to be a certified ethical business.
Eco Friendly
Twenty-two tampons or towels are used & sent to landfill during the average woman’s period. Each of these requires raw materials, energy for processing, transport and packaging. This adds up to over 11,000 disposable sanitary products in a lifetime - one Mooncup lasts for years.
Healthier
The Mooncup is made from soft medical grade silicone and is latex-free, hypoallergenic and contains no dyes, plastic, bleaches or toxins. It doesn’t cause dryness or disrupt the body’s natural pH levels, and has never been associated with toxic shock syndrome.
Cheaper & Convenient
One mooncup costs the same as an average 3-month supply of disposable sanitary products. In addition, Mooncup offers great advice by phone and online for using their product.
History
Menstrual cups date back to the 1930s (like tampons), but fell by the wayside as massive advertising campaigns encouraged the monthly re-purchasing of tampons and associated disposability with convenience. Menstrual cups and washable sanitary towels came back in the 1980s as women began searching for eco-friendly (and cheaper) alternatives to disposable products. Around this time, one of Mooncup’s founders discovered a latex menstrual cup while backpacking in Australia, and launched the hypoallergenic silicone menstrual cup in Spring 2002. Today, the Mooncup is distributed in over fifty countries around the world and its Usage Guide is printed in twelve languages.
