Tom & Julia Rigby, Johnson's Farm, Warrington

Johnson's 153 acre farm in Lowton, Warrington grows potatoes and other vegetables as well as producing organic milk. Tom officially converted the farm to organic on the day of his marriage to Julia – the 2nd of May, 1999. As well as to Unicorn, the Rigbys sell vegetables into other Manchester outlets, various box delivery schemes and their local food hub, Northern Harvest.

Tom, who’s 54 and has an 8 year old son, is also the NFU’s Lancashire County Chairman. "Since turning organic we’ve had good years and bad years," explained Tom. “The milk price has held up well but the price of organic cereals has increased. We try to be self sufficient but still have to buy some fodder in." Despite ups and downs, the Rigbys’ commitment to organic, sustainable farming remains strong.
