Tropical Wholefoods

Dried Pineapple, Mango, Banana, Mushrooms and Chilli

tropical foodsTropical Wholefoods are pioneers of the fairly traded dried foods world, having set up their first project, Fruits of the Nile, in Uganda in the early 1990’s. Using simple solar driers to preserve tropical fruits, the company has been enabling fruit growers to access European markets ever since. Harvested when fully ripe and immediately sun dried, the fruits are bursting with flavour, and the fair-trade model used by the company means that the growers are getting a better deal too.

Tropical Wholefoods are currently working with Traidcraft, the Fair Trade Foundation, and its European counterpart the FLO to establish Fair Trade criteria for dried fruit, and expect to gain certification once this has been achieved. It is also a member of IFAT, a global network of Fair Trade Organisations working to improve the tropical foodslivelihoods and well being of disadvantaged people in developing countries, and to change the unfair structures of international trade. Meanwhile, the company has a clearly defined fair trade policy, including maintaining long term partnerships with overseas partners, providing them with training, information and technology, paying fair, guaranteed prices to producers and facilitating their access to grants and loans.
